Generally, objects move by some force that overpowers the force of friction which is present between the moving body and the surface on which it is moving. The tabletop hovercraft provides a way to circumvent the problem of friction. The balloon is like the fuel tank in this case, since it stores air. When the hovercraft setup is let go, the highly pressurized air inside the balloon looks for an escape route. It finds that through the underside of the CD, creating a thin film of air between the hovercraft and the tabletop, and causing the hovercraft to 'hover'. Thus, the hovercraft moves with astounding ease once we give it a slight push in any direction. We added a little hole on the side of the hovercraft that acts like a rudder, letting a little air escape out so that the hovercraft moves in the opposite direction of the outgoing air.
