Since sound is produced due to the vibration of air, an increase in volume of air vibrated or increasing intensity of vibration will make the sound louder. To do so mechanically depends upon three factors - the material, the volume and the shape of the object.
Materials like paper are poor reflectors of sound as compared to something like ceramic and sea shells. Objects with a large volume, like the megaphone, have the capacity to focus the sound waves to a larger extent, thus amplifying them. Finally and most importantly, the shape of the object creates air columns that resonate sound waves in different ways.

The sea shell conch wins despite its small size because the sound waves get amplified within it due to its unique spiral cross sectional shape that almost seems to increase the volume of air and intensity as it moves through it.
Nautilus shells, like this conch, get wider in similar pattern as that of a golden spiral, and hence are related to both the "Golden Ratio" and the "Fibonacci series".
The growth is progressive and increases in similar ratio in every quarter turn:
