When the bottle is pressed instantaneously, the air/smoke within it gets constricted due to the lack of volume and tries to shoot out of the opening at great speed. While doing so, it ends up taking the shape of a vortex. <a href="http://www.dartofscience.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/SRL-3.png"><img class="size-medium wp-image-675 alignright" src="http://www.dartofscience.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/SRL-3-300x169.png" alt="SRL 3" width="300" height="169" /></a>A vortex is a region in a fluid where the flow is rotating around an axis line. Generally, the fluid flow velocity in a vortex is the greatest next to its axis and diminishes as it moves away from it. Therefore, the velocity of smoke near the center of the flow is much higher than that at the edges. As a result, we observe a ring shape, where the curling smoke is visible at the edges while the displacement of the smoke is much faster at the center.
At the root of this phenomenon are the concepts of viscous friction within the flow of smoke and the friction between the sides of the the bottle and the moving fluid. Since the air/smoke at the edges is in contact with the sides of the bottle, it is subject to friction and as a result, is dragged back. This is how we create these peculiar<u>, </u>smoke rings which can also be called toroidal vortex rings.)
