A stationary wheel always has its center of mass on a plane perpendicular to the surface. As the wheel moves, it grips the surface at its point of contact, due to friction. This force acts as a lever between the point of contact and the center of mass, toppling the wheel over. The wheel now rolls forward, presenting a new point of contact for the road.
Imagine if the wheels of the semi-wheel robot were circular. Unlike traditional yolk-wheel systems, here we have attached the motor to the rim of the wheel. Therefore, when the wheel touches the ground and grips it due to friction, it acts as a lever between the point of contact and the imaginary center of the wheel. As a result, the motor attached to the wheel is pulled up. Now, The semi-circular wheel abruptly ends, and the whole attachment literally topples over. Thankfully, we have attached a pair of skis to the motor attachment, which catch it from falling over, and the cycle repeats itself.
