The molecular structure of hydrogels is therefore a network of such polymer chains that are hydrophilic, which means that they attract the positively charged hydrogen ion in the water molecule to form weak ionic bonds known as hydrogen bonds. Therefore, when we put the hydrogel granules in a bowl of water, they absorb water and grow many times their size.
