In our case the dynamo serves as a link between the shaft and the wheel. It rotates along with the wheel due to friction, and transfers the rotational momentum through the solid shaft fitted inside it that connects to the flexible shaft of the drill. The original design for the dynamo consists of a magnet that rotates along the solid shaft to produce electric current as a result of the fluctuating magnetic field, that is transmitted to light up a small bulb. A flexible shaft is an ingenious mechanical device that transfers rotational energy through a non-rigid medium. It is made up of layers of high tensile wires wound over each other in opposing pitch angles. On application of rotational forces to the shaft, these wires expand or contract according to the direction of rotation. Furthermore, they do so in directions opposite to each other - when the outer wire contracts, the inner wire expands. This creates torsional stiffness many times greater than one that can be generated with individual wires. This is how torque is transferred through this flexible medium. The drill bit on the "chuck" can be changed to produce the desired bore.){kind=spacer}
