The three bottles are connected in a specific manner for the air pressure to act on the water. Initially, the 3rd bottle is full and the 2nd one is empty, ie, it only has air. When water is filled into the 2nd one via the first 2L bottle, it puts pressure on the air present in it. The air can only escape from the top pipe into the top of the 3rd bottle. Therefore, as the air pressure in the 3rd bottle increases from the top, the water gets pushed out from the bottom into the open ended pipe, creating the fountain. The thicker pipe connecting the 2L bottle to the bottom bottle ensures that the incoming fluid is higher than the outgoing one from the last open ended pipe, and this helps increase the pressure of the fountain to reach much higher than the 2L bottle.
