A pH indicator is a chemical that changes some of its physical properties when mixed with acidic or basic solutions. As test solutions, we use acetic acid and sodium bicarbonate respectively mixed with water. Phenolphthalein reacts with the free hydrogen ions present in the acidic solution to turn to pink. Similarly, it reacts with the free hydroxyl ions that are present in basic solutions to return back to its colourless state. In our demonstration, small amounts of acetic acid and sodium bicarbonate solutions are already present in the glass before adding the phenolphthalein.
