In the process of donating oxygen to acetone, the Copper oxide turns back into Copper. This reaction releases a lot of energy in terms of heat and light, and as a result, the Copper glows.
Copper also acts as a catalyst in methanol's conversion to methanol in the following reaction -
2CH3OH + O2 --> 2HCHO + 2H2O
Copper provides a site for this reaction to take place due to the presence of free oxygen ions on its surface. Also, it requires constant heat for the reaction to happen, in the absence of which the Copper glows for a few moments and then becomes subdued.
