When materials like rubber or PVC are in vigorous contact with wool, fur or silk, weak chemical bonds known as adhesive bonds are formed between some of the molecules in contact with each other. In order to neutralize the electrochemical potential of the whole, electrons are transferred from one material to the other. When the materials are separated, some of the bonded atoms tend to keep the extra electrons, causing static electricity. When certain objects are introduced within the electric field of such materials, their molecules get polarized and as a result, they are attracted to the former.
