The presentations utilize the same characteristic of high elastic quotient of rubber to create some fun gadgets.
We made a lid by pushing an inflated balloon over the mouth of a jar and then deflating it while making sure that no air entered the jar. As the balloon was also being pressed down, its elastic surface grips the rim of the bottle and forms the cap.
For the confetti launcher, once the balloon is securely attached to a cylindrical object like a tube, it can shoot things out of the other end! We filled it up with confetti and pulled on the stretchy part. On releasing, the balloon acts like a coiled spring - converting the potential energy that it stored within itself into kinetic energy as it rushes to regain its original state. We get a confetti shower as a result.
To modify our confetti launcher and upgrade it to a projectile launcher that we can actually aim with, all we did is to reduce the size of the mouth of the launcher by using a bottle - similar to what is known as the bore or the gauge of a gun - to have better control of the projectile.
Finally, we launched smoke rings! The elasticity of the balloon causes it to stretch as we pull it and increase in volume, accommodating the smoke inside, which is then quickly pushed into the bottle once we release the balloon. This air now is pushed out of the mouth of the bottle as a short burst. It moves slower near the edges due to the friction along the bottle's internal surface and the air moves faster in the center as it's free to move. This causes the outgoing smoke to form what is known as toroidal rings.
