Yet, unlike ice which turns from solid to liquid and then evaporates as vapour, dry ice directly becomes gaseous carbon dioxide, skipping the liquid state. Hence the name, 'dry ice'. When it comes in contact with hot water, the energy transfer results in the formation of large quantities of carbon dioxide gas mixed with water vapour making it look like smoke.

The rotation of the fan causes an air current pulling up the smoke collected below and the vertical vents along the sides allow air from outside rush in to replace the smoke escaping from the exhaust fan. The orientation of the vents make this incoming start a spiral movement along the rising smoke column making it appear more like a tornado.
The center of the fan becomes the eye of the tornado because of the high pressure distribution in that area, as compared to the bottom part. This is how we make our dry ice tornado!)
