When we hold it in our hands, high above the floor, the yoyo has acquired potential energy, which is directly proportional to its mass and its height above the floor. We put plasticine inside our yoyo to increase its weight. The wound string is like the yoyo's motor. When we leave the yoyo, its potential energy actually gets converted to two different kinds of kinetic energy - one is the translational kinetic energy of the object falling down. The other is the rotational kinetic energy of the yoyo rotating around its axis as it falls due to the unrolling of the string. This is why the spinning yoyo falls slowly as compared to a stationary one - it expends some of its stored energy into rotation. When we give the string a tug just as it is about to unroll completely, we kick start it again by adding a bit of kinetic energy to the yoyo which increases its speed which helps it to wind up straight to the top. If we don't give any added momentum to the yoyo while it’s unwinding then it can never reach back to the top.
