The kaleidoscope as we know it has been around since the 16th Century, but its scientific principles have been known to us since antiquity. It is constructed by placing multiple reflectors at an angle with each other in such a way that the reflected image is multiplied to form a pattern or a mosaic. Kaleidoscopes can be constructed using two or more reflective surfaces. A two mirror kaleidoscope yields a circular image against a black background. In this instance, we use three surfaces to achieve an infinite symmetrical pattern that fills the visual field. A transparent OHP sheet fixed against a black paper acts as a reflective surface in the first instance and a mirror is used in the second. The shape and number of reflective surfaces drastically change the kaleidoscope image. A few tips to make your own kaleidoscope
