When we mix soap with water, the resulting fluid has a much lower surface tension than water. This allows the fluid to stretch itself around orifices, forming a film. By blowing air laterally along the axis of the orifice, we stretch this film outwards, until the force exceeds the adhesive force between the film and the orifice. Once detached, the stretched film pulls itself inwards, trapping air within itself, forming a bubble. A sphere exhibits the least surface area among three dimensional objects of the same size, which makes it the most efficient shape for the film to wrap around itself. In our bubble machine, we used CDs with different kinds of holes. We got better results from the CD with three holes because the soap water was not able to leave the irregular holes in a smooth way.We also attached a fan to the design that would blow air laterally to the plane of the holes. Moreover, we found a way of rotating both the CD and the fan by powering both their motors by a single battery using a potentiometer. A potentiometer splits the voltage of an incoming current into two sections, whose resistance is variable and can be controlled. That is how we control the speed of rotation of the CD.)
